It's a good thing that I'm a writer instead of a singer or dancer, because unlike American Idol that's on television, Kindle Scout is strictly words on a website. Believe me, I (and, I'm rather certain, you) wouldn't want to see me performing on the screen!
I became aware of Kindle Scout a few months ago when a writer who had been successful with his Kindle Scout entry, spoke to my local mystery writers' group. I was very intrigued because it's become increasingly difficult for authors to attract the attention of publishers, and this looked like a good potential avenue to being published by a major publisher. After the meeting, I studied everything I could find about Kindle Scout, and decided to try this decidedly unconventional approach with my recently completed manuscript for Mind Game.
I knew that the competition would be fierce and that the odds against getting a contract were overwhelming. No one other than the staff at Kindle Scout knows the percentage of submitted manuscripts that are accepted for the competition, and Kindle Press, the publishing imprint of Amazon, publishes fewer than two percent of the entries that appear on the Kindle Scout competition website. Not knowing the criteria for "winners" added to my wondering how Mind Game would do. All that is known about the selection process is that it isn't strictly a popularity contest with a simple the book that gets the most nominations wins formula. That suited me fine, because with my highly limited (some would say nonexistent) social-media savvy, my ability to drive voters to Mind Game's Kindle Scout page was severely limited. Maybe, just maybe, there would be enough "scouters" who would find Mind Game on their own and nominate it for publication.
I uploaded Mind Game to the Kindle Scout website, along with the other information they required, and then waited until I learned if it had made the cut. A couple of days later I received the good news, and Mind Game went "live" on Kindle Scout.
I was shocked that on the very first afternoon, Mind Game had joined the "Hot & Trending" list. Not only that, but it stayed "Hot & Trending" through all the hourly updates for the entire day. The next day it was "Hot & Trending" for all twenty-four hours. In fact, once on the list, Mind Game remained there for every hour of its first week on Kindle Scout, the only competitor to do so. Those results were staggering to me. Maybe I have a chance after all!
I know that the second week is going to be challenging, as will the third and the fourth. Much of Mind Game's momentum has likely come from it being new on the site, and I wonder what will happen when newer entries show up. I'm anticipating that it'll drop off of "Hot & Trending".
